Campus Security Programs and Procedures

There are many programs on campus which help promote a safe environment. These programs include:

1. Advisory Committee on Campus Safety - A group of policy level personnel, including faculty, professional staff and students, that examines and makes recommendations relative to safety conditions on the University campus.

2. Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Program - Educational programs are mandatory for incoming students during summer orientation and are available throughout their college years on topics including acquaintance rape; "roofies" and other date rape drugs; alcohol and sexual assault; sexual consent; dating "games" and sex role socialization; and strategies for reducing risk. A group called Men REACH (Men for Relationship Education and Change) also offers information and frank discussion by male facilitators for male students to assist men in understanding the positive roles they can have in sexual assault prevention.

3. Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) - UPD has Certified RAD Instructors to offer workshops on personal safety and self-defense for women, men and children.

4. Don't Walk Alone Safety Escort Service - A student volunteer organization available Sunday through Thursday evenings throughout the academic year to escort students, on request, between the Library or other podium locations and residence halls.

5. Emergency and Blue Light Telephone System - A system of emergency, direct-ring telephones located across the campus and in parking lots. These phones ring directly into UPD headquarters. Brochures available at: UPD, Vice President for Student Success, and other campus offices.

6. Lighting - UPD, the Department of Physical Plant, and the Advisory Committee on Campus Safety regularly survey lighting on campus to ensure that areas are adequately lighted. Numerous additions have been made to lighting in the last ten years.

7. Anti-intrusion Alarms - Many academic and support areas of special sensitivity are protected by alarm systems which ring in directly to a central station or UPD. Officers are dispatched to intruded areas to evaluate the situation.

8. Operation I.D. - A system of marking personal property that allows it to be traced if found anywhere in the United States.

9. Intensive Drug and Alcohol Education Programs - Mandatory education program for students identified as having behavioral, drug or alcohol problems. The new student orientation program includes mandatory sessions on alcohol/drug abuse. Will be adding Substance Abuse Alcohol Simulator (SAAS) as a hands-on educational tool.

10. Criminal Investigation Unit - UPD has a team of detectives assigned to do follow-up investigations of reported crimes. Specially trained to offer programs on recognizing and protecting oneself from on-line harassment.

11. Dispute Mediation Center - A residence hall program used to resolve minor disputes between roommates and other acquaintances.

12. University Counseling Center and University Health Center - Confidential health services for crime victims including counseling and medical examination and treatment.

13. Office of Conflict Resolution & Civic Responsibility (Formerly Judicial Affairs) - Hears and adjudicates referrals from students victimized by other students. Sanctions range from warning and probation to expulsion.

14. Crime Prevention Pamphlets - UPD and Division of Student Success publish numerous pamphlets which are distributed to students and staff to assist them in preventing victimization for specific types of crimes.
