Overview
UPD is staffed around the clock with University Police officers as well as NYS certified security officers assigned to residential halls and academic buildings. University Police Officers are vested with full law enforcement powers and have responsibilities and authority similar to local police in any community, including the authority to arrest. Officer candidates are required to have an Associate's degree; most have Bachelor's or graduate level degrees. They are trained at a NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services accredited Zone 5 Basic Academy for Police as well as receiving additional training specifically focused on law enforcement in an academic setting. Our officers are trained and equipped to deliver the highest level of police and safety services.
UPD Officers on this campus are trained and armed with department issued handguns. The UPD communication system has links with the New York State Police Information Network and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. This allows UPD to share information at both the State and National level regarding criminal activity and motor vehicles.
Since many of our students live off campus, UPD has a close and ongoing working relationship with the Albany Police Department, the Town of Guilderland Police and New York State Police. In addition, the Director of Personal Safety & Off-Campus Affairs works closely with the Albany Police Department to review existing safety initiatives in the traditional student neighborhoods off campus and to make improvements as warranted. We regularly cooperate in situations of common interest, share crime and victimization information, and attempt to improve the safety and well-being of students who live off campus.
