Police Canine Unit
SUNY Albany’s K9 program was established in 2001 by Officer Krosky working together with Chief Wiley and Deputy Chief Kern. The program was established to help provide the campus community with a safer working environment. With the assistance from Albany County Sheriffs Department, our department tested several canines and were able to find a dog that would fit into our department needs. Currently our department has two canine teams which continuously train with other local police agencies to maintain their skills.
Cody with his handler Officer K. Krosky were the first K9 team at SUNY Albany. Cody is a male Belgian Malinois that was donated to or department. Cody is trained for Explosive detection, tracking, building searches, area searches, criminal apprehension and handler protection. Cody was selected for his ability to perform all his duties and for his community relations. Cody is great around people and was perfect canine for working on a college campus.
Bailey with his handler Officer J. McGuire became SUNY Albany’s second K9 team in 2003. Bailey is a male Labrador retriever that was donated to our department by his handler Officer McGuire. Bailey is trained and certified in Narcotics detection, tracking and article searches.
The University's K9 teams are valued members of the community and the police department. Cody and Bailey are both utilized on campus as well as assisting other local agencies. Both K9 teams are available to provide community programs and demonstrations regarding the use of canines in policing.
