The Criminal Investigations Unit of the University Police Department is a plainclothes unit responsible for both criminal and non-criminal investigations at the University at Albany. Members of the C.I.U. have received training in a broad variety of investigative topics such as Sexual Assault Investigations, Domestic Violence, Computer and White Collar Crimes and Evidence Collection and Preservation.

The Unit has a close working relationship with surrounding law enforcement agencies, such as the New York State Police, the Albany Police Department, the Town of Guilderland Police as well as federal agencies such as the United States Postal Inspection Service, and of course, other S.U.N.Y. Public Safety Departments statewide.

In addition to criminal investigations the Unit also performs pre- employment investigations for prospective Department employees and other investigations as warranted. In addition to these investigative duties members of the C.I.U. also research and draft policies in their areas of expertise and occasionally deliver presentations to campus groups on appropriate topics.
